Recommended Instagram Ads Image, Video Sizes: What are the design requirements and recommendations for my Instagram ad?

One of the major challenges you face advertising on Instagram is image or video size in digital marketing. It does not exempt you even if yours is slider ads format. Whatever the ads type for Instagram there is need to take size into consideration to remove stress of resizing via the ads manager and eventually losing quality or cutting off part of the pictures.

We encountered same issues while setting up Instagram ads for a client at Foskaay recently and thus decided to share the experience and sizes you should consider as officially given by Facebook for their Instagram Ads.

They analysed it as below:

There are two different ad placements on Instagram (ads in feed and ads in stories). To ensure you’re creating high-quality ads on Instagram, keep the following design recommendations and requirements in mind:

Instagram ads are now available to everyone in both Power Editor and ad creation. To run ads on Instagram, you’ll need a Facebook Page.

Ads in feed

Image Size

The recommended image size for Instagram ads depend on which format you use:


  • Minimum Resolution (600 x 600 pixels)
  • Maximum Resolution (1936 x 1936 pixels)


  • Minimum Resolution (600 x 315 pixels)
  • Maximum Resolution (1936 x 1936 pixels)


  • Minimum Resolution (600 x 750 pixels)
  • Maximum Resolution (1936 x 1936 pixels)

When you’re creating your ad in Power Editor or ad creation, you can use Crop Image to help ensure your Instagram ad looks the way you want it to.

Video Size

Your video’s file size can be up to 4 GB max.

Caption Length

The caption you use for your Instagram ad will appear below the image and may include up to 300 characters.

Aspect Ratio

The aspect ratio for Instagram ads depend on the format.

  • Square – 1:1
  • Landscape – 1.91:1
  • Vertical – 4:5

Website URLs in Captions

As a best practice, we recommend you avoid using URLs in your Instagram ad’s text. URLs will not be clickable from your ad’s text field.

9:16 Full Screen Vertical Ad

  • .mp4 or .mov (Video)
  • .jpg or .png (Photo)

Maximum File Size

  • 4GB (Video)
  • 30MB (Photo)

Video Length

  • Maximum: 15 seconds
  • Images show for 5 second by default


  • Recommended Resolution: 1080 x 1920
  • Minimum: 600 x 1067

Supported Codecs

  • Video: H.264, VP8
  • Audio: AAC, Vorbis
